The Senator representing Central Senatorial District, Eteng Jonah Williams, today, engaged youth leaders from across the district during an interactive session with the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Cross River State Central Chapter, held at Gold Palm Hotels, Ikom.
The meeting, aimed at deepening communication and strengthening youth inclusion in governance, was attended by the State Chairman of the Youth Council, Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, alongside members of the State Executive Council representing the central district.
In his opening remarks, Comrade Olayi described the session as a “bold and progressive step” by the Senator, stressing the importance of youth involvement in shaping public policy.
“Youths in Cross River Central are not just ready to work, we are already contributing meaningfully to democratic processes,” he said. “We appreciate what you’ve done so far, but like Oliver Twist, we are asking for more.”
He called for the Senator to consider integrating more young people into his empowerment programs and also proposed a formal liaison who could serve as a communication bridge between the Senator and the youth community.
In response, Senator Eteng Williams thanked the youth body for the opportunity to interact directly with them, emphasizing the importance of such engagements in building trust and mutual understanding.
“This kind of forum gives me firsthand insight into your challenges and aspirations. And I must commend your passion and organization,” he said.
Addressing the request for a youth liaison, Senator Williams announced the appointment of Comrade Gifted Nelson as his Special Assistant on Youth Affairs.
“This appointment is in direct response to your request. I believe in giving young people responsibility, and Gifted Nelson will serve as the link between my office and the vibrant youth of Cross River Central,” he said.
He assured the Council of more consistent engagement going forward, stating, “My office remains open to ideas, feedback, and collaboration. Youth empowerment is not a seasonal intervention—it is a continuous investment.”
The meeting ended with a vote of thanks from the youth executives, who praised the Senator’s humility and responsiveness, expressing hope that the partnership would yield lasting benefits for young people across the district.
