PDP Governors Battles Atiku, Vows to Take Over Party Structures
A recent report by Arise News has shed light on a critical meeting of governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jos, Plateau State. Details indicate the governors are working to reclaim control of the party and curb the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This development, reported by THISDAY, has sparked tension within the party as Atiku and his allies push back against the governors’ decisions.
Atiku’s faction, particularly members of the Board of Trustees (BoT), has voiced strong objections to the postponement of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, which was delayed until February 2025. The delay, allegedly orchestrated by key governors, has created divisions, with pro-Atiku groups like the Save PDP Group accusing Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State of spearheading the move.
The group further alleged that the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, is colluding with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed to position him as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. These allegations underline the growing factionalism within the PDP as leaders vie for control ahead of upcoming political battles.
According to sources at the Jos meeting, Governor Fintiri and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang led efforts to prioritize internal stability over electing a successor for Dr. Iyorcha Ayu, the former National Chairman. The meeting’s outcomes indicate the governors’ intent to consolidate power, leaving Atiku’s camp to rally support and strategize for its next move.
The unfolding power tussle underscores the PDP’s ongoing struggle for unity as it navigates a challenging political landscape.
