OTU REASSURES ELDERS’ FORUM, VOWS TO PROTECT CROSS RIVER’S BOUNDARIES AND DRIVE DEVELOPMENT

In a bold reaffirmation of his administration’s priorities, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has pledged to protect the state’s territorial integrity while addressing key challenges, including insecurity, infrastructure development, and economic empowerment.
Speaking during a strategic meeting with the State Elders’ Forum and other stakeholders, Governor Otu expressed profound gratitude for their steadfast support and invaluable counsel. He underscored their critical role in shaping a united and progressive Cross River.
“Our elders have always been the custodians of wisdom and guidance. Your unwavering support strengthens our resolve to tackle the challenges before us,” he said.
Governor Otu highlighted the administration’s proactive measures to strengthen security across border communities, revealing the deployment of drone technology to monitor state boundaries and protect against encroachment.
“We will not cede an inch of Cross River’s land to anyone. While we are known for our hospitality and peaceful nature, our kindness should never be mistaken for weakness,” he stated firmly.
Addressing recurring clashes between herdsmen and farmers in Odukpani, the Governor announced plans to resolve the conflicts through dialogue and sustainable solutions, emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
Governor Otu expressed grave concern over illegal mining activities that threaten the state’s natural resources and sustainability. He disclosed plans to partner with security agencies for stricter enforcement and regulation, ensuring that mining activities contribute to the state’s development rather than undermining it.
“The unchecked exploitation of our resources is unacceptable. We will identify and regulate all mining activities to protect our environment and secure Cross River’s future,” he declared.
Reiterating his administration’s focus on infrastructure, Governor Otu outlined ongoing efforts to improve road networks, healthcare facilities, and schools across the state. He described these projects as essential to enhancing residents’ quality of life and attracting investment.
“We are laying the groundwork for a prosperous Cross River. Infrastructure is the backbone of development, and we are committed to building a state that meets the needs of our people,” he said.
The Governor also reiterated his commitment to reclaiming the state’s oil wells and other resources, asserting that Cross River will fight for its rightful place in the nation’s resource-sharing framework.
Governor Otu emphasized the importance of unity among Cross Riverians and announced plans to conduct town hall meetings in all senatorial districts. These forums, he explained, will serve as platforms for citizens to voice their concerns and contribute to policymaking.
“We believe in governance that listens to the people. These town halls will bring us closer to the grassroots and help address localized challenges effectively,” he added.
As part of his vision for a thriving economy, the Governor unveiled plans to equip citizens with modern skills tailored to the demands of the emerging economy. He reassured the elders that his administration is laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity.
“Patience is key as we work tirelessly to deliver on our promises. Our vision for Cross River is clear, and we will not waver in our pursuit of progress,” Otu concluded.
In his remarks, Col. PAM Ogar (rtd.), leader of the Cross River Elders’ Forum, commended the Governor for his proactive approach to governance. He noted that the meeting was an opportunity to review progress on critical issues such as boundary disputes, communal clashes, and resource management.
The forum also recommended conducting a comprehensive census of individuals involved in mining activities to ensure proper regulation and prevent security risks.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to peace, development, and unity, as stakeholders vowed to support the administration’s efforts to create a stronger and more prosperous Cross River State.
