The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with UN-WOMEN and the Government of Canada and former lawmaker, Mrs. Rita Ayim, have organised a constituency outreach, calling for greater women participation and representation in politics.
The event, held on October 12 2024, had representatives from the traditional rulers council, religious leaders, Civil Society Organisations, political party leaders, youth organisations rep women groups and the vulnerable emphasised on the critical role women play in community and national development.
Speaking at the event, the team Lead from NILDS, Mr Livinus Nandi, said there is need to increase women involvement in politics so as to bring governance and the dividends of democracy to family level.
Also speaking, the Outreach Lead and former legislator representing Ogoja State Constituency at the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon. Rita Ayim, said women play significant role and therefore should be given considered in the political space, adding that Nigerian women have contributed immensely to socio-political and economic development of the Nigeria nation.
She decried the situation where women are used for electioneering and dumped at the end as of they have no contribution to make during governance.
According to her, a good number of women have prove themselves in various leadership positions and therefore called on women to brace up and fight for their rights.
