M.K.O ABIOLA WON JUNE 12, 1993 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, SAYS IBB

Former military ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has made a historic revelation, admitting that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola was the rightful winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

Babangida's confession is documented in his newly released autobiography, "A Journey in Service," launched in Abuja on Thursday.

The revelation was brought to light by former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book during the event.

"There was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements," Babangida stated.

According to the former head of state, Abiola, who contested on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), not only secured the majority of votes but also met the geographical spread required to be declared president.

Babangida described the annulment of the June 12 election as the most difficult decision of his life. His military regime had overseen the election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, only to controversially annul the results.

While he did not provide further details on the exact reasons behind the annulment, IBB expressed relief that former President Muhammadu Buhari later acknowledged Abiola’s victory and posthumously honored him with the prestigious Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR)—a title reserved for Nigerian presidents.

"I am happy that President Buhari officially recognized Abiola’s victory and honored him accordingly,” he noted.

For decades, Babangida had dodged direct confirmation of Abiola’s victory, leading to speculation and controversy over the decision to annul the election. His latest admission is expected to reignite debates about Nigeria’s democratic struggles and the need for full historical accountability.

As Nigerians reflect on this revelation, many are now questioning: Why did Babangida annul the election if he knew Abiola had won? Will this confession lead to a deeper probe into Nigeria’s political past?
