Humanitarian Affairs Commissioner Provides Succor To Gas Explosion Victims

The Honorable Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Dr Helen Egodo, recently paid a sympathy visit to victims of fire incident in Calabar. The inferno which erupted as a result of gas leakage and explosion ravished a building that housed the leaking gas cylinder, leaving its occupants in a devastating condition. 

Arriving at Peace Medical Center, No 17 Efut Street, Calabar, accompanied by her Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Mbong Ausaji and Deputy Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Edem Darlington, the Commissioner conveyed sympathised with the victims and in a heartwarming gesture of empathy, made a significant cash donation to cater for the procurement of relevant pharmaceutical products to enhance their treatment. 

In the course of the visit, Dr. Helen Egodo engaged with the Chief Medical Officer (CMD) of the Health Facility where the victims were admitted. There, the CMD, Dr. Edet Attih,ba former Commissioner for Health in Akwa Ibom State, revealed that The victims - a 29 Years old man, his (3months) pregnant wife, 12-year old cousin and his year old daughter were hurriedly brought to the health center on the 23rd of August at 3:05am by a Good Samaritan. He further stated that the victims need maximum support and care considering the cost implications of their treatment/ burns management and the trauma inflicted on them. 

In addition to her personal contributions, the esteemed humanitarian pledged to collaborate with the State government and relevant agencies to ensure that further assistance and aid are extended to the victims. 

The Family members and friends of the victims who were at the Clinic as the time of the Commissioner's visit, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Dr Helen Egodo for her kind gesture and keen interest in the welfare of Cross Riverians, asserting that the presence of the Commissioner and her team was an indication that the government empathizes with them in their predicament.
