Health Commissioner Commends NMA For Suspending 40-day Strike, Assures Of More Synergy

Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk has commended the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) for suspending its 40-day strike over the kidnapping of her member, Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim.

Recall that Prof. Ekanem Philip-Ephraim was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen from her private clinic at Atimbo Road, on July 13, 2023.

The 40-day old strike action was finally suspended after an emergency meeting yesterday, with the Chairman of Cross River NMA, Dr. Felix Archibong stating that the Association "saw the need to suspend the strike because they understand the plight of Cross Rivererians."

The Health Commissioner described NMA's decision as a positive action that has proven their love for the lives and health of Cross Riverians.

"On behalf of the state governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, I humbly wish to thank NMA and her leadership for suspending their industrial action. Indeed, they have shown how passionate they are about the lives and health of Cross Riverians. They was a massive effect of the strike action on the people as such the government truly appreciates them.

"Governor Otu has vowed never to leave any stone unturned as he will do everything possible to tackle the issue of kidnapping and will ensure that the state security is tightened. He has made a promise and we have all seen the positive steps as security presence has increased in the metropolis."

Dr. Ayuk reassured the medical body that they will continue to be synergy between the Association and the government knowing the vital role NMA plays in keeping Cross Riverians alive and healthy. He called on those in need of healthcare services to visit the health facilities as doctors are on ground to attend to them.
