Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has been widely lauded for his groundbreaking efforts in elevating golf within the state, signaling a new chapter in sports development and tourism.
Lady Anne Ene Ita, Chairperson of the Calabar Golf Club Project Committee, commended the governor’s visionary leadership during a recent event in Calabar. She emphasized the dual role of golf as both a recreational activity and a bridge for international collaboration. “Golf is a healthy pastime and a global connector, and Governor Otu’s recognition of its potential is truly commendable,” she stated.
As a retired federal permanent secretary and the Female Captain of the Calabar Golf Club, Lady Ene Ita assured stakeholders of the committee’s unwavering commitment to delivering a world-class facility. “With the state government’s generous support, we are focused on achieving the highest standards for this project,” she added.
Engr. Francis Archibong, the project’s supervising consultant, detailed the ongoing renovations, which are aimed at transforming the Calabar Golf Club into a top-tier national and international golfing destination. He noted that over 900 meters of perimeter fencing is near completion, while the clubhouse is undergoing significant upgrades, including roofing, electrical works, painting, and the addition of a new reception area.
Further enhancements include the construction of a modern gatehouse, a caddies’ shed, and a spacious parking lot, all of which are progressing steadily.
This marks the first substantial state government investment in the Calabar Golf Club since its inception in 1991, a testament to Governor Otu’s commitment to promoting sports excellence and tourism in Cross River State.
Golf enthusiasts and stakeholders have expressed excitement over the developments, describing them as a transformative step for the state’s sports and recreational scene.
