Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, has reverted the Motor Vehicle Administration function back to the Cross River Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) from the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA).
A circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, with reference number, SSG/GSA/S/5/Vol.XII/475, titled, 'RE: Key Structural Changes that will Improve the Revenue Profile of the State,' and dated 24th July, 2023, directed that the return is with immediate effect and for strict compliance.
The circular stated that: "The function of of Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) hitherto transferred from the Cross River Internal Revenue Service to the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency following the Agency's Law No. 2, 2015 is hereby transferred back to the Cross River Internal Revenue Service in order to curb revenue leakage and ensure proper accounting.
"Accordingly, all Motor Licensing Authorities (MLAs) in the State are directed to report to the Cross River Internal Revenue Service for further necessary action."
The circular also directed that all appointments of Revenue Consultants, direct supervision of Agents in the Ministries of Agriculture, Health, Education, Lands, the Department of Cocoa/Produce and the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMRA) is henceforth to be and carried out by the Cross River Internal Revenue Service, while Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are to concentrate on their core functions of enforcement and supervision of the operators in these sectors.
It will be recalled that in 2021, the MVA function was taken away from the Cross River Internal Revenue Service, making Cross River the only State in the country to not have IRS oversee that function.
