Ebonyi State: Students cry out over neglect of Union Comprehensive Secondary School Obeagu

From Omaka OKOH (ABAKALIKI)

Students of the Union Comprehensive Secondary School, Obeagu have cried out for help over the poor infrastructural decay in the college.

The institution was established in 1996 and is now in a terrible state of despair. The school is located at the heart of Ebonyi state, but the school's infrastructure is in a shambles, a testament to government's glaring neglect.

When our correspondent visited the school, it was observed that the remaining three blocks, built by the Ebonyi State Universal Basic Education Board are crumbling as their walls have cracked, roofs blown off, and ceilings on the verge of collapse.

One of the students, who spoke off record, said: "We lack the basic necessities: windows, proper flooring, and functional desks. The walls are cracked, the ceiling is collapsing, and the entire structure is on the brink of disintegration," Ene Ejike, a student, lamented.

"During the rainy season, water leaks through the damaged roof, making learning impossible, while in dry seasons, extreme heat fills the airless classrooms.

"The school's examination hall, ravaged by fire four years ago, remains in ruins."

The community, driven by desperation, has taken it upon themselves to reroof the hall, fearing the National Examination Council (NECO) and West African Examination Council (WAEC) would revoke the school's exam center status.

Another student, who does not want his name in print, said: "We plead with Governor Francis Nwifuru to intervene because we are passing through hell as a classroom block constructed by the federal government has also collapsed.

"We beg the governor to look our way, to save our school from this abyss of neglect. For years, this school structures have been in deplorable conditions.
