Ebonyi Gov't Seals 283 Primary, Secondary Substandard Schools

The Ebonyi State government has sealed 283 substandard primary and secondary schools across the state, the Commissioner for Education, Professor Paul Nwobashi, disclosed to journalists in Abakaliki on Thursday, June 5, 2025.

He described the high number of substandard schools as worrisome, warning proprietors to desist from operating such schools or face further action from the state government.

“In the private school sector, we have closed down schools operating under trees, in uncompleted buildings, and in other unconducive environments,” Nwobashi said. “We have shut down about 283 substandard schools in the state. However, we face challenges because some of these schools reopen after being sealed.

“We are now establishing a new task force to revisit and permanently shut down these schools.”

He added that the sealing of substandard schools is part of the state government’s efforts to ensure quality education for its citizens.

“I call on proprietors of unapproved private schools to engage with Ministry of Education officials for guidance on establishing standard schools and obtaining approvals,” Nwobashi urged.

On educational infrastructure, the commissioner said the state government has initiated the construction of 39 classroom buildings for secondary schools across the 13 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.

He noted that these 39 classroom model school blocks, designed with aesthetic appeal, are nearing completion.

“For primary schools, we are constructing 36 two-storey buildings, two in each LGA,” he added.
