The Cross River State Government has officially launched the first phase of its Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) revitalization initiative, beginning with the Etomi Ward PHC in Etung Local Government Area. This landmark move underscores the state’s commitment to bolstering grassroots healthcare service delivery.
During the handover ceremony on Monday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, emphasized the transformative potential of community participation in sustaining healthcare infrastructure. Dr. Ayuk highlighted the government's dedication to fostering collaboration between communities, the state, and development partners to enhance healthcare outcomes.
"Community ownership is a cornerstone of sustainable healthcare development," Dr. Ayuk remarked. He congratulated the Etomi community for being the first to benefit from the initiative, urging residents to take responsibility for the project's success.
Dr. Vivien Otu, Director General of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, reinforced this sentiment by urging the community to closely monitor the project’s implementation. She stressed the importance of accountability in ensuring the delivery of high-quality services.
"Active community oversight will be key to the success of this project," Dr. Otu said. She also praised Governor Bassey Otu's administration for its unwavering focus on healthcare, calling the revitalization a milestone in advancing the "People First" agenda.
Speaking on behalf of the Etung Local Government Council, Vice Chairman Hon. Asam Amba expressed the council's full support for the initiative, pledging to align with the state government’s vision for improved healthcare services.
Ntufam Oscar Ebam, representing the Etomi community, extended heartfelt gratitude to the state government for prioritizing their healthcare needs. "We are committed to supporting this project and ensuring its success for the benefit of our people," Ebam assured.
The revitalization initiative is funded through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) in partnership with the National Primary Health Development Agency. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and outcomes at the grassroots level.
The launch of this project marks a significant step in Cross River State’s efforts to empower local communities and strengthen healthcare systems. It represents a beacon of hope for improved health services in the state, ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
