The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Stephen Odey, has suspended two principals for for collecting illegal levies from students,
The state government had in state-wide broadcast and in public statement banned collection of illegal levies across public schools.
The affected principals included Mr Esang Usang, the Principal of GSS State Housing with Vice Principal Administration, Mrs Effiom Uduak Orok, directed to take over as the acting principal and Mr. Owoh Effiong of West African People's Institute(WAPI). The vice principal administration, Mrs Emem A. Ijang, is the acting principal pending further investigation by the ministry of education.
The suspension was as a result of an unscheduled visit to Government Secondary School State Housing Estate Calabar Municipality, and West African People's Institute (WAPI) Calabar following an incessant complaints from parents and guardians about the schools' illegal levies collection.
During the visit, the Commissioner discovered that the principal of Government Secondary School, State Housing Calabar, was found wanting in the collection of illegal and unapproved levies contrary to the ministry's approval.
The commissioner warned other school principals to stick only to government approved levies to avoid sanctions, enjoining parents to always report any school principal acting outside the ministry's directives.
