C'River: SEMA DG Calls For Rejuvenation Of Grassroot Sports

The Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Rev. James Anam has enjoined old students of educational institutions to complement government efforts in revamping sporting activities in their alma mater.

Rev. Anam who made the call, Thursday, at the 10th Annual Inter-House Sport event of Government Primary School, Ediba, Calabar, said inter-house sports has the likelihood to hone as well as scout for talents who can become the next super stars representing the state and country in global competitions.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Elder Francis Effiom, the DG averred, “The Sports Sector is one key vast area that captures varying interests and makes desirable impact in lives of individuals and nations. The the place of catching them young in primary school inter-house activities is needful, therefore government should use every possible means to enhance grassroot sporting activities at primary school level to uncover talents which will bring glory to Nigeria in future."

Also speaking, Executive Secretary, Calabar Municipal Council Local Government Education Authority, Mrs. Offiong Effiong stressed on the importance of grassroot sports, pointing out that apart from the advantages of physical fitness to well-being, all professional sportsmen and women began their sporting journeys from humble beginnings like primary schools, before rising to sporting stardom today.

 Head Teacher of the school, Mrs Eunice Etorti appealed for supports from well wishes in upgrading facilities and donation of sporting equipment to boost extra curricular activities.

In the over-all result presented by the Chairman, Parents-Teachers Association – PTA, Evangelist Emmanuel Archibong, Red House took First position with 220 points, Green House 2nd position with 192 points, Blue House 3rd position with 180 points, Purple House 4th position with 140 points and yellow House 5th position with 130 points respectively at the event.

An old pupil of the school and All Progressives Congress (APC) party stalwart, Elder Comrade Iso Bassey Edim assisted by his (1988-1994) class-mate Apostle Christopher Ben Akpan presented prizes to the participants while the Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs. N. A. Oqua thanked all invited guests for finding time to grace the occasion despite their busy schedule.

Government Primary School, Ediba Road, Calabar has produced many dignitaries who have contributed to the development of the Society among whom are Director General (DG) of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Rev. (Dr.) James Anam and Rt. Hon. Efa Esua former member who represented Calabar Municipal State Constituency in Cross River State House of Assembly.
