By Benjamin GBOR
Cross River State Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, held its inaugural board meeting in Calabar.
The meeting was attended by the newly- appointed Directors of the agency, among members, Barr. Paul Idiga, Mr. Ali Baba, Dr. (Mrs.) Kanebe Uba, and others, with Dr. Charles Ushie, the Director General (DG) presiding over the meeting.
The main focus of the meeting was to carry out sensitisation/awareness to educate the public on consumer rights and the necessary actions to take when such rights are breached.
In his opening speech, Dr. Ushie commended Governor Prince Bassey Otu for appointing them and promised that they would work diligently in the best interests of the people.
He outlined the agency's responsibilities, emphasising its role in engaging with trader groups and other stakeholders to regulate and moderate the prices of goods and services.
Dr. (Mrs.) Uba praised Dr. Ushie for his efforts in the previous administration to ensure that the agency had legal support.
They also resolved to establish a five-member task force committee in each local government area to effectively carry out the agency’s enforcements after the proposed sensitisation campaign.
Furthermore, the board pleaded with the governor to assist the agency with operational vehicles as well as funding for awareness campaigns on radio, TV, and other media platforms.
Additionally, the agency will pay courtesy visits to the police, DSS, Army, Civil Defense, and key figures such as paramount rulers and commissioners of commerce and industries.
