The Cross River State House of Assembly has passed the Green Economy Commission Bill, 2024 into law to check environmental degradation, deforestation.

The bill, an Executive initiative, was presented by a special Committee led by Rt. Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo, who represents the Odukpani State Constituency and the leader of the House.

The newly-enacted law is designed to mitigate environmental risks, address ecological scarcities, and promote economic growth that minimises the unsustainable pressure on natural resources.

Asuquo stressed that unchecked extraction, processing, and production of raw materials have led to environmental degradation, deforestation, and a negative impact on economic and social activities across the state.

"The Green Economy bill emerged from the need to address these critical challenges.

"It will create a sustainable, fair, and inclusive economic system through public and private investments aimed at reducing energy consumption and safeguarding our natural environment."

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, commended the sponsors of bill, saying it is timely and crucial as well as will attract investments and foster economic growth in Cross River State.
