Chinese Company in Cross River State Under Scrutiny as Legislator Calls for Investigation

The member representing Ikom 1 state and minority leader of the Cross River State House of Assembly Hon Samuel Neji Abang, has called on the state government to invite the unidentified Chinese Company operating in Okuni community, Ikom local government for investigation.

Recall that indigenes of Effi village, Okuni have for months now been agitating to know the true identity of the company, their certifications among other demands.

Presenting the matter before the legislature during plenary on Wednesday, the minority leader said the chinese company have remained unidentified without a company name and has refused to synergize with the host community or specify their mode of operations.

The legislator described the issue as a matter of urgent public interest and prayed the company's management be brought in for questioning and investigation into their operations.

"We need to take a wholistic approach to this issue, the Forestry Commission, Chiefs of Okuni and Youth Leaders should be invited for Explanation, the attention of Security agencies should as well be drawn to the illegal activities of this Chinese Company operating in the State" Abang pleaded.

He asked that operations and activities of the company be put on hold pending a holistic Investigation before the House. Members who lend their voices on the matter maintained that a special committee be constituted immediately to properly investigate the said Chinese company in Okuni community for identification and provide documents guiding their operations in the State.

The speaker of the state house of assembly Hon. Elvert Ayambem immediately following the motion constituted a special committee headed by Hon. Abeng Egbe, member representing Obubra ll State Constituency to look into the matter.
