BREAKING: WAEC Nigeria Denies WASSCE Resit For Nigerians Amid Confusion

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has officially addressed rumors regarding the introduction of a new resit exam for Nigerian candidates.

In a statement released on January 8, 2025, WAEC Nigeria clarified that the reports circulating about a resit exam for West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates in Nigeria are unfounded and false.

Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, WAEC Nigeria’s Head of Public Affairs, explained that the misinformation stemmed from comments made by WAEC Ghana’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, which had been misinterpreted. Kapi’s statement referred to a new exam initiative in Ghana, not Nigeria.

“Contrary to the circulating claims, the reports are misleading. They pertain to a new exam format introduced in Ghana and have no relevance to Nigerian candidates,” Mrs. Adesina clarified.

WAEC Nigeria’s examination schedule remains unchanged, with three distinct diets each year: the May/June WASSCE for school-based candidates, the November/December WASSCE for private candidates, and the first series, which takes place between February and March.

“We are preparing for this year’s first series as scheduled,” Mrs. Adesina confirmed, ensuring that Nigerian candidates will not be affected by any changes in the resit exam format that has been introduced elsewhere.

The clarification also dispels any confusion regarding the 2025 WASSCE for private candidates. On January 7, WAEC Nigeria had announced an extension to the registration period for private candidates, allowing them to register for the first series by January 8, 2025.

WAEC Nigeria assured the public that there is no change to the regular system and all candidates can proceed with their plans as scheduled.
