AKWA Ibom: Rainstorm Wreaks Havoc in Unity School, Forces Management To Postpone Resumption Date

Heavy rainfall has wreaked Havoc in Federal Government Unity College, Ikot-Ekpene
local government area of Akwa Ibom state, forcing
the management to postpone resumption.
The rainstorm destroyed offices and classroom blocks of the college.
The incident, which occurred on Friday evening following a downpour, wad accompanied by a windstorm, destroying the buildings in the college.
Facilities affected include the fence at the Girls’ hostel, the Basic Science Laboratory, the classroom blocks for JS1, JS2, SS2, Administrative buildings and the Vice Principal’s office.
Other facilities destroyed by the rainstorm include the school e-library where a set of computers have been damaged, a Solar panel water pump, water storage tanks at different locations in the college and the generator house where a tree fell on the roof and damaged the entire powerhouse.
A statement obtained from the Parent Teachers Association platform on Saturday informed parents not to bring their wards/children to the college till further notice.
The statement endorsed by the chairman of the association, Dr J.J. Etim, which was shared with our correspondent in Uyo, said the postponement was to enable the management to renovate the damaged areas
“This is to inform all parents that their children/Wards who have not returned to the College should not return till further notice.
“Only Students of examination classes JSS 3 and SS 3 should return. There had been a rainstorm that had affected all the buildings and facilities in the College. In view of the above, no more resumption tomorrow except for students of JSS 3 and SS 3. Parents should comply with this directive, please.

another short statement to allay the fears of parents regarding the safety of their wards in the rainstorm mayhem, the PTA executive assured parents that a few students who were in their respective hostels during the incident were safe.
“Greetings, dear esteemed parents. We are pleased to inform you that both students and staff are very safe. It is natural to panic after receiving news of a disastrous rainstorm.
“Rest assured, staff members on the ground whose roofs were blown away including the Director/Principal ignored their flooded homes and water-soaked belongings, went in the rain and amidst the windy storm to check on the students and ensure their safety. We really thank God for it could have been worse but he intervened.”
