No fewer than 32,000 applicants have applied to fill the 206 advertised space into the Cross River health management board.

In a document obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar, a total of 32,341 had applied for the vacant positions as at the deadline for application on September 2nd.

According to the document, a total of 49 doctors had applied to fill the available space of 31, while 1,240 nurses applied for the 153 vacant space.

Simirlarly, 184 pharmacists applied to fill the advertised space of 22, while a total of 776 candidates applied as laboratory scientists that was not advertised.

NAN reports that like Laboratory Scientists, there were other applicants from other fields that applied for the jobs.

Breakdown of the application revealed that a total of 14, 977 males applied for the various positions while the figure for the females was 17,358.

It would be recalled that the state's Commissioner for health, Dr Henry Ayuk had in August said the governor had approved for the employment of 206 medical personnel as part of efforts to boost the health sector.

The Commissioner who made the disclosure in an interview with the NAN, had bemoaned the sector as inherited by the present administration. The commissioner had noted that only 20 medical doctors were met in the sector by the Gov. Bassey Otu led government.

He also said that the human resource and infrastructure is receiving the desire interventions from the current administration.

He noted that aside the employment of personnel, a number of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) have been earmarked for rehabilitation.

"When i took over as commissioner for health, i met a sorry health sector where even international donors and partners were leaving the state with only about 20 doctors in the state employment.

"It was on this basis that we had to work in line with the 'People First' mantra of the governor Otu led administration with the aim of improving the overall well-being of the citizens, hence the government's priority for an improved health sector.

"Today after one year in office, we can boldly say that there is great hope for the health sector in the state with very modest and visible achievements to show.

"The ministry has recorded improvements and developments in infrastructure, human resource, access to services, health quality as well as clamp down on quacks," he had stated.
