Kanu’s Lawyer Ejimakor Confirms Safety, Remains in Custody After Protest Arrest

Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, has confirmed that he remains in custody at Kuje Prison following his arrest during Monday’s #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja.

Ejimakor, who made the disclosure in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, assured his supporters that he was safe but expressed concern over the manner his case was handled by the authorities.

“I am safe and sound but still under custody at Kuje Prison. The Magistrate refused to listen to our submissions and insisted on remanding us till Friday,” he wrote.

The lawyer also alleged that his case was deliberately taken to a specific Magistrate Court in Kuje instead of other available courts within Abuja. “They bypassed several Magistrate courts in town and headed to this one in Kuje,” he stated.

Ejimakor was arrested alongside other protesters during the demonstration organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore to demand the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Meanwhile, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticized Ejimakor’s participation in the protest, describing it as a breach of professional ethics.

Onanuga, in a statement, argued that Ejimakor’s involvement in a protest concerning an ongoing court case was inappropriate. “As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case,” he said.

He advised Kanu’s legal team to focus on presenting a strong defence rather than resorting to street demonstrations.

Ejimakor’s arrest has since sparked reactions from human rights advocates and pro-Biafra supporters, who have called for his immediate release and respect for the rule of law.
