"Host Illegal Political Gatherings, We Shut Down Your Facility" - Wike Warns Abuja Hoteliers/Event Centers

The Federal Capital Territory Administration has warned hotel and event centre owners in Abuja not to allow their facilities to be used by illegal organisations or political groups without INEC recognition.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s administration said any facility found hosting gatherings by unrecognized groups risks losing its land title. The warning was issued Friday by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister.

According to the FCTA, the move is to boost security in Abuja and support security agencies. Usage of event centres, hotels and other public buildings will now be closely monitored to prevent activities that can disrupt public peace.

The administration told facility owners to confirm the legal status of any group requesting their premises and to understand the purpose of the event before approval. All lands allocated in the FCT must be used only for lawful activities.

Hotel and event centre operators were specifically told to deal only with political party leaderships recognized by INEC, especially now that political activities are increasing. Proper records of all transactions must also be kept.

The FCTA said failure to comply will lead to revocation of title documents. The directive, it added, is aimed at protecting lives and property and stopping unlawful groups from using public facilities to create tension in the capital.
