"He Died On Top Of Me" - Ex-DSS Chief Dennis Amachree Reveals How Abacha Died

The mystery surrounding the death of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has been reignited following startling revelations by a former top operative of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In his new book titled "DSS at 40: My Journey Behind the Shield", former DSS Assistant Director, Dennis Amachree, has given a first-hand account of what transpired on the night Abacha died on June 8, 1998, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

Amachree, who was then in charge of operations, disclosed that he personally interrogated the woman who was with Abacha in his last moments.

According to him, the woman, identified as a pharmacist who had come to the Villa with her sister, was brought to him around 4:05 am after the General collapsed.

Her first words, he wrote, were chilling:

"I did not kill him, he died on top of me... Beware of sweet things. Dem dey kill."

The ex-spy chief said the woman maintained that Abacha suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while they were intimate, dismissing decades-long rumours of a poisoned apple by aggrieved soldiers, foreign intelligence poisoning, or voodoo complications.

The book, which chronicles Amachree's 40-year journey in Nigeria's secret police, was unveiled in July 2026 and Chapter 17 which details Abacha's death has since gone viral.

Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998, died suddenly at age 54, with the official cause never fully disclosed by the military junta, giving rise to several conspiracy theories.

Amachree's account is now considered the closest official version to come from a security insider who was part of the investigation.
