By Ekanem Asuquo

Governor Bassey Otu yesterday joined prominent political and community leaders across Cross River State and beyond to celebrate Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe on his 55th birthday, describing him as a leader deeply rooted in the people and an enduring asset to the state.

The celebration, held at the Hilton Hotel in Abuja, attracted a wide array of supporters, policymakers and dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, Governor Otu said every individual is created with a divine purpose, but only those who understand how to navigate life’s challenges achieve true fulfillment. He praised Senator Jarigbe for “embodying this principle through his consistent devotion to the welfare of his constituents.”

According to the governor, the senator “remains a people oriented leader who is genuinely loved by his people,” unlike leaders who lose touch with the public. He noted that the senator’s firm reputation for service has unified Cross River State at a time when political divisions once ran deep.

Reflecting on age and leadership, the governor recalled thinking 50 was old during his school days. He described Senator Jarigbe as “a young gentleman” who, at 55, has gathered enough experience and maturity to make decisive contributions to society.

Otu, speaking on behalf of Cross Riverians at home and in the diaspora, emphasised that the senator’s inclusive approach to leadership continues to endear him to the people.

He expressed delight at the calibre of attendees, including councilors, lawmakers, chairmen of local governments, deputies and former governors, noting that their presence signifies the senator’s broad acceptance and the respect he commands across the state.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to progress, stating that Cross River State is breaking new grounds with achievements driven by collective effort. He emphasised the need for unity and encouraged emerging leaders to sustain the state’s growth trajectory. He ended with prayers for long life, prosperity and “better days ahead” for the celebrant.

In a goodwill message earlier, a former House of Representatives member for Ogoja Yala Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Peter Igbodor, described Senator Jarigbe as a distinguished leader whose commitment to public service continues to inspire many. Igbodor highlighted the senator’s people oriented projects, human capital development programmes and extensive educational support, noting that these initiatives have strengthened self reliance and accelerated socio economic development across Cross River North. He commended the senator’s vision, dedication and passion for inclusive growth.

Similarly, a community leader and political stalwart in Ogoja, Chief James Achara, hailed Senator Jarigbe as “an extraordinary son of Ogoja” whose leadership, defined by courage and compassion, has uplifted countless communities. He said the senator’s presence is evident in youth empowerment, economic advancement, infrastructure renewal and in the renewed confidence he brings to the aspirations of Cross River North. Achara described him as a man driven by a profound calling to serve, one who shows empathy, stands firm in critical moments and consistently pursues justice and development for all.

In another goodwill message, Hon. Rita Ayim, former Chairman of Ogoja Local Government and former member representing Ogoja State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly, extended warm birthday wishes to the senator. She said, “I join the host of heaven, the good people of the Northern Senatorial District and the entire Cross River State to celebrate an icon, an exceptional and empathic leader dearly loved by his people.” She noted that his popularity is rooted in genuine service and his unbroken commitment to his electoral promises.

Hon. Ayim commended the senator for the numerous interventions he continues to deliver across Cross River North, ranging from constituency empowerment to development projects aligned with the mandate entrusted to him by the people. She prayed for divine guidance over his life and career, saying, “May the hand of God continuously be upon him, protecting and directing his path to greatness.” She added that God’s purpose for both the senator and the people he represents would continue to unfold for the greater good.

Meanwhile, the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Cross River State, Vena Ikem, Esq., praised Senator Jarigbe for fostering peace, unity and political stability in Cross River North despite his recent move to the All Progressives Congress. In his birthday message, Ikem stated that although party affiliations may differ, Senator Jarigbe has consistently placed the collective interest of Cross River North above partisan considerations.

Ikem noted that the senator’s political maturity and people first approach have helped maintain cohesion across communities that once experienced sharp divisions. According to him, the senator’s influence in unifying political actors, calming tensions and promoting peaceful coexistence “stands out as one of his most enduring strengths.” He added that the senator’s ability to sustain harmony across the district, even after his party realignment, reflects “a rare statesmanship that prioritises development over rivalry.”

He affirmed that leaders like Senator Jarigbe demonstrate that public service is rooted in character, not party colours, and that true leadership seeks the wellbeing of the people regardless of shifting political tides. Ikem prayed for continued wisdom and divine guidance for the senator, expressing confidence in his commitment to peace and development. “Senator Jarigbe has shown that the unity of our people is bigger than politics. His actions continue to inspire peace, cooperation and hope across Cross River North,” he said.

Senator Jarigbe’s 55th birthday has continued to attract goodwill from political leaders, stakeholders, constituents and admirers across the state and beyond, reflecting his rising profile and people oriented leadership. The celebration concluded with a collective acknowledgment of his impactful journey, marking the occasion as a moment of pride, gratitude and inspiration for Cross River State.
