From Omaka OKOH, Abakaliki

Flood wreaked havoc in Enoh Itim community in Afikpo local government area of Ebonyi state as eight have been allegedly swept away and 800 persons displaced following a heavy downpour.

The devastating flood destroyed farmlands and other valuable property worth several millions of Naira even as the elderly and women have been evacuated to nearby community.

The incident, which occurred last week Friday, followed a torrential downpour that led plantain plantation and surrounding farmlands being submerged.

The flood swept away crops and properties, leaving many residents displaced.

Confirming the tragedy, Francis Abani Okpani, the Councillor representing Itim Ward in the Afikpo Legislative Council, disclosed that three bodies had so far been recovered, while five others remain missing, adding that three children were among the deceased.

But, Timothy Nwachi, Chairman of Afikpo LGA, described the incident as “deeply saddening” and extended his condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them that the local government would work closely with relevant State and Federal Agencies to provide relief materials and humanitarian support to those affected.
