Cross River Govt Committed to People’s Welfare, Says Deputy Governor

The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, has assured citizens that the administration of Governor Bassey Otu remains fully committed to placing the welfare of the people at the heart of governance in line with the “People First” mantra.

Odey gave this assurance on Sunday during a stakeholders’ engagement session in Obudu Local Government Area, as part of his ongoing Northern Senatorial District tour. He emphasized that every policy, project, and program under the Otu-led administration is designed to uplift lives across both urban centers and rural communities.

“Despite economic challenges and inadequate allocations due to the state’s exclusion from the 13% derivation benefits as a littoral state, the government has consistently ensured the progression of the Obudu Cargo and Passenger Airport project,” the Deputy Governor said.

He added that investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure, agricultural productivity, and the rehabilitation of rural roads under the RAMP initiative remain a priority, stressing that “Cross River State has met its counterpart funding obligations to ensure these projects are delivered.”

Addressing concerns raised by women, youths, and traditional rulers on road infrastructure, unemployment, and border security, Odey assured them that Governor Otu’s administration will remain accountable and responsive.

“We will continue to engage with relevant authorities and partners to improve the socioeconomic status of our people, particularly in the Northern Senatorial District,” he pledged.

In their separate remarks, stakeholders commended the administration and urged sustained efforts.

The Member representing Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, described the session as “a clear demonstration that this government listens to its people.” He said the inclusive leadership style of Governor Otu “has restored confidence among communities in the North.”

Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi, praised Odey’s senatorial tour, noting that it coincided with the New Yam Festival.

“By coming down to engage with us at this cultural season, the Deputy Governor has shown that this administration respects our traditions while also addressing our challenges,” Agabi stated.

Community leader, Chief Dr. Tony Undiandeye, also lauded Odey’s grassroots approach.

“This tour is not just symbolic, it is strategic. It brings government closer to the people and gives us the assurance that our voices are being heard,” he said.

The Paramount Ruler of Obudu, alongside women and youth representatives, also praised Odey for his “hands-on approach to governance,” describing it as “a model that fosters direct communication between the government and the people.”
