Cross River: Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce Recovers 24 AK-47 Rifles from Illegal Miners

The Cross River State Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce has recovered 24 AK-47 rifles from suspected illegal miners operating in various parts of the state.

Chairman of the Taskforce, Mr. Paul Effiong, disclosed this during an interaction with journalists shortly after a thanksgiving service held in his honour to mark his 40th anniversary at The Fountain of Rehoboth Ministry, WAPI Junction, Calabar.

Effiong said the recovery of the weapons highlights the dangerous dimension illegal mining has taken in the state, noting that he has come under threats and intense pressure but remains undeterred.

“I cannot be intimidated by the threats of illegal miners. We have faced severe resistance in the line of duty, including armed attacks. Hoodlums hiding in the forests, sponsored by powerful interests, have on some occasions disarmed security operatives. But with resilience, we recovered the weapons and handed the suspects over to the appropriate authorities,” he said.

The chairman also revealed that he and members of his family have survived three separate auto accidents within a week, incidents he believes are not unconnected to his committee’s clampdown on illegal mining activities.

“Apart from being physically attacked, I had three separate accidents in one week. My mother, wife, and daughter were also involved. It’s not easy confronting billionaires who bankroll these illegal operations and hire thugs to frustrate our work,” Effiong lamented.

He further advised public office holders in sensitive positions to put God first and seek divine direction in their daily duties, stressing the need for perseverance in the face of opposition.

Also speaking at the event, the General Overseer of Rehoboth Centre, Calabar, Pastor Douglas Vincent, urged Effiong to be cautious of sycophants who may flatter him during good times but abandon him when challenges arise.
