Court Orders Re Arrest of Six Defendants Over Alleged Same Sex Gathering in Nasarawa

A High Court sitting in Mararaba Garku, Nasarawa State, has ordered the re arrest of six defendants accused of participating in an alleged same sex gathering, following their failure to appear for a scheduled preliminary hearing.

The bench warrant was issued on Friday, January 9, 2026, after the defendants did not show up in court as required. The affected persons are Adisa Attah, Fosa Ogai, Irene Okoro, Sue Ajiluku, Tela Odojie and Kessie Nonim.

The Nasarawa State Government had earlier instituted legal action against the six, alongside 18 other suspects, who were arrested on January 1, 2026, by members of the Etsu vigilante group at Voxquay Gardens in Masaka. Authorities alleged that the group was apprehended while attending an outlawed same sex party.

Following their arrest, the suspects were arraigned and subsequently granted bail on January 2, 2026, pending further proceedings. Their failure to appear at the preliminary hearing prompted the court to issue the bench warrant to compel their re arrest and appearance.

The prosecution stated that the charges were filed under the applicable penal laws in Northern Nigeria. If convicted, the defendants could face a prison sentence of up to 14 years.

The case has been adjourned to a later date, pending the execution of the bench warrant and the re arrest of the defendants.
