CONCERNED STAKEHOLDERS CAUTION AGAINST BRIBERY IN THE APPOINTMENT OF UNICAL VC

Some concerned Stakeholders have called on the chairman and members of the Governing Council of the University of Calabar to resist attempts by desperate aspirants to the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar to bribe their way through the process.

The call became necessary following boastings by some candidates who claimed to have been bankrolled by certain politicians and businessmen to emerge in the process.

The stakeholders warned that should the process be compromised as a result of bribery by these candidates supported by moneybags, the University will suffer for it, as it will be mortgaged to recover the money spent in the process of the appointment.

The stakeholders also warned against the election of corrupt persons as University senate representatives to the selection committee, as doing so will undermine the choice of having a credible candidate emerge as the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar.

According to the concerned stakeholders, the the next Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar should be someone who who has demonstrated capacity, character and competence in the discharge of his or her responsibilities in the University of Calabar.

The Stakeholders who include Staff, Students, alumni and parents and guardians of students in the University insist that the next Vice Chancellor of the university should be one who will be focused on tackling the present challenges of the University, including ensuring the accreditation of programmes, equipping of laboratories and studios, provision of infrastructure for both staff and students amongst other pressing needs of the University and not someone who is targeting to award contracts to his cronies and sponsors to recover money spent in the process of the appointment.

They commended the president and members of the Alumni for setting criteria for the would-be- Vice Chancellor of the University as someone who has no connection with cultism or occultism nor known to be corrupt in his or her past dealings.

The stakeholders also called on the State Security Services,SSS, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and other relevant bodies to keep close watch on candidates for the office of the vice chancellor, the Chairman and council members and the Senate representatives who will emerge as selection committee members as to ensure a transparent process that will lead to the appointment of a credible candidate as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar.
