Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint ambassadors to represent Nigeria abroad, stressing that the absence of such envoys is undermining the country's ability to maximize gains from the president's international engagements.
Kalu, in a video message on his Facebook page, praised Tinubu's foreign trips, saying they have been beneficial to Nigeria and Africa's economic growth but however emphasized the need for functional embassies to follow up on these diplomatic efforts.
"The travelling of Tinubu is very good for our country and its economic development. He can't just be president of Abuja.
"Our President has done well in his international engagements, but it is also time to appoint ambassadors so that the country can reap the full benefits of these diplomatic and economic efforts," Kalu said.
It has been over two years since President Tinubu assumed office, and he is yet to appoint ambassadors. In September 2023, he recalled all Nigerian envoys, citing the need for a fresh start.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the delay has been attributed to financial and economic challenges confronting the administration.
