Assemblies of God Nigeria Dismisses Fmr UNICAL Chaplain Rev. Joseph Ushie, Over Alleged Disobedience, Defiance of Executive Directives

The General Council of the Assemblies of God Nigeria (AGN) has formally dismissed Rev. Joseph Ushie from the ministry and suspended him from membership of the church over what it described as his failure to comply with the directives of the church's Executive Committee.

In a disciplinary letter dated June 13, 2026, and signed by the General Secretary of the Assemblies of God Nigeria, Rev. Godwin A. Amaowoh, PhD, FnbR, the church announced that the Executive Committee, at its sitting on June 13, resolved to take disciplinary action against Rev. Ushie following his alleged refusal to obey earlier directives communicated in a previous letter dated May 24, 2026.

According to the notice, the decision was taken pursuant to Article XVIII, No. 14 of the 2021 Constitution (as amended) of the General Council of the Assemblies of God Nigeria, which lists as grounds for discipline the rejection, refusal, neglect, or failure to comply with directives issued by the Executive Committee, District Presbytery, Area, or Missionary Area Counselling Committee.

The letter states that the disciplinary action took immediate effect from June 13, 2026, with Rev. Ushie being suspended as a member and dismissed as a pastor from the ministry of the Assemblies of God Nigeria.

The General Council further directed the Calabar District Presbytery to remove Rev. Ushie's name from the district's ministerial list in line with the disciplinary decision.

Copies of the notice were also forwarded to the Executive Officers, Calabar District Presbytery, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, the Board of Trustees, and the congregation of the University of Calabar Chapel of Redemption (UCOR), among others, signaling the church's intention to officially communicate the decision to all relevant stakeholders.

The disciplinary action comes amid the prolonged leadership crisis that has affected the University of Calabar Chapel of Redemption, with the General Council's decision representing one of the most significant interventions by the national leadership of the Assemblies of God Nigeria in the matter.

The General Council expressed appreciation for the cooperation of all concerned parties and urged compliance with the decision as communicated in the official notice.
