Cross River State Police Command has confirmed a brazen attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Katchuan Iruan in Boki Local Government Area in Cross River Central.

The state’s police spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the incident occurred around 3 a.m. on Thursday when suspected arsonists set the church on fire. The blaze destroyed all records in the sacristy, while two vehicles parked within the premises, a priest’s Lexus 350 and a Toyota Corolla, were completely burnt.

“No suspect has been identified at this time. Investigations are ongoing to determine those responsible for this criminal act,” ASP Eitokpah said. He added that the scene has been documented, photographed, and the case formally recorded at Okunde Police Station for discreet investigation.

The attack is part of a wider pattern of insecurity affecting religious institutions across Nigeria. In recent months, incidents targeting churches have increased, drawing concern from local communities and international bodies, including calls from nations such as the United States for improved protection of worship centers.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and provide any information that could aid the investigation while emphasizing that the police are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.

This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges facing religious communities and underscores the need for heightened preventive measures to safeguard lives, property, and places of worship in Cross River State.
