APC Urges Council Leaders to Ensure Peaceful Congresses

By Ekanem Asuquo

The State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress has implored local government council chairmen to guarantee a peaceful and orderly conduct of the party’s ward and local government congresses across the state.

State Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Inyang gave the directive while briefing journalists on preparations for the exercises scheduled for Wednesday and Friday.

He said the party had concluded arrangements to ensure a smooth process anchored on consensus and strict adherence to the existing zoning formula.

“We have taken necessary steps to ensure a peaceful exercise across the state based on consensus and respect for zoning to promote unity and internal democracy,” Inyang stated.

According to him, the move followed a stakeholders meeting convened earlier in the week by Governor Bassey Otu, who also serves as the party leader in the state. The meeting had in attendance members of the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly, where the governor emphasized harmony, consultation and consensus building within party ranks.

Inyang explained that council chairmen, as party leaders in their respective local governments, were directed to replicate the engagement at the grassroots to ensure inclusiveness and prevent internal disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He further disclosed that returning officers had been appointed in line with the party’s constitution to supervise the congresses and forward results to the state headquarters.

A total of 27 officials are expected to emerge as ward executives in each of the 196 political wards, comprising working and non working committee members as well as ex officio members.

The party expressed confidence that the measures put in place would strengthen its internal structures and position it firmly for future electoral contests.
