Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP, Joins Opposition Coalition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This decision comes weeks after he reportedly aligned with a "Coalition group" that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its chosen platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the 2027 general elections.

In his resignation letter, sources close to Abubakar indicate he cited a significant divergence between the current direction of the PDP and the foundational principles the party was established upon.

This move follows months of speculation about Atiku's political future, particularly amid ongoing discussions regarding the formation of a broad opposition coalition. Reports suggest he has been actively involved in these efforts, aiming to unite key political figures, including Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai, under a common front to unseat the APC.

The adoption of the ADC by this coalition, which reportedly includes disillusioned members from the PDP, Labour Party, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), signifies a major realignment in Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

While the ADC itself has reportedly faced some internal issues following its selection as the coalition's platform, the development underscores a strong desire among opposition figures to present a united challenge.

Atiku Abubakar has consistently advocated for a robust opposition to the incumbent government.

His resignation from the PDP and subsequent alignment with the ADC through this coalition are clear steps in that direction.

The coming months are expected to reveal more details about the structure and leadership of this new coalition and its potential impact on the upcoming elections.
