'We’ve Moved Beyond Epe' – Umahi Replies Donald Duke On Coastal Highway
The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, has clarified comments by former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke suggesting that the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Superhighway may not extend beyond Epe.
According to the Minister, construction has already progressed beyond Lagos and is advancing simultaneously across several states. Ongoing work includes about 28 km in Ogun, 52 km in Ondo, 27 km in Cross River, approximately 47 km on the first Akwa Ibom section, which is over 60% complete, and the 180 km stretch in Akwa Ibom.
Umahi explained that the project’s alignment was adjusted for engineering and economic reasons, as the original coastal route would have required crossing unstable terrain and constructing multiple long bridges at enormous cost. The revised alignment ensures the highway remains technically feasible, cost-effective, and durable.
He also noted that the project is creating thousands of jobs, improving security, and opening new opportunities for trade, agriculture, tourism, and education along the corridor.
Describing the highway as one of Nigeria’s most transparent and economically viable infrastructure projects, Umahi reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to delivering the project and called on Nigerians, especially those in the Niger Delta, to support the initiative as a catalyst for long-term regional development. He also praised HITECH Construction Company for its quality work and strong engagement with host communities.
