The Managing Director of the South South Development Commission, Ms Usoro Akpabio, has reiterated the commission’s resolve to rally critical stakeholders toward achieving sustainable development across the South South region.

She spoke in Asaba last weekend during a strategic meeting with the Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, held as part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening cooperation and accelerating regional development efforts.

Ms Akpabio said the engagement was necessary to establish a strong framework for the effective rollout of planned human capital and infrastructure development programmes of the commission.

She stressed that productive collaboration between the commission and state governments was vital to delivering long term development outcomes, adding that partnerships remain central to addressing the region’s developmental challenges.

Governor Oborevwori welcomed the engagement and assured the commission of Delta State’s commitment to working closely with it to advance initiatives designed to enhance the wellbeing of residents and stimulate economic growth.

The meeting, which had Senator Ede Dafinone in attendance, examined priority development initiatives, strategic focus areas and cooperative mechanisms aimed at promoting sustainable growth across the South South.

Participants also discussed the need to harmonise the commission’s mandate with state development plans to ensure efficient delivery of infrastructure, economic empowerment and social development projects within the region.

The South South Development Commission is a federal agency established to promote sustainable development in the South South geopolitical zone. Its responsibilities include tackling infrastructure deficits, encouraging economic diversification, supporting human capital development and advancing environmental sustainability among member states.

The commission also coordinates development interventions, works to reduce regional disparities and promotes social cohesion through partnerships with federal, state and local governments, as well as the private sector and development partners.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment by both parties to pursue inclusive development strategies capable of unlocking the vast economic potential of the South South region.
