Over 20 PDP Lawmakers Threaten Defection Over Nomination of Gov Mba's Candidate As Woman Leader

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing fresh turbulence as more than 20 federal lawmakers have threatened to dump the party over alleged plans to impose a candidate for the position of National Woman Leader, reportedly backed by an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor.

In a joint statement signed by their spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the lawmakers accused the PDP leadership of issuing a nomination form to the said candidate, believed to have the support of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.

The lawmakers vowed to defect unless the nominee was disqualified before the party’s scheduled screening on Tuesday.

“We are disappointed that loyal PDP members from the South East are being sidelined. If this imposition is not reversed, we will have no choice but to leave the party before the national convention,” they said

According to them, certain interests within the PDP were working to “surrender the party’s key positions to individuals aligned with the APC.”

They insisted that the party must remain committed to its members and not compromise its internal processes for external influence.

The lawmakers further urged the PDP leadership to ensure that only genuine, loyal members contest for the National Woman Leader position.

“The PDP must uphold internal democracy and transparency if it hopes to regain the trust of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” they declared.

The screening of candidates for national offices is expected to take place on Tuesday as preparations intensify for the party’s national convention.
