Following the recent outbreak of cholera disease in some states across Nigeria, the management of Southern British High School (SBHS) in Calabar, Cross River state has assured both parents, guardians and the general public of the safety of their wards in the institution, saying they are top notch school with strict emphasis on personal hygiene and community health.
This was contained in a press statement released by Mr. Akin Fakorade, chairman of the school’s advisory board, yesterday in Calabar.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) had in a forum in Lagos recently, through its Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, reportedly said Nigeria may declare a state of emergency on cholera if the cases recorded so far exceed a manageable threshold.
THE BEAGLE NEWS reports that after the sudden outbreak of the epidemic in some states last week, there had been renewed calls by some public health experts on the need for Nigerians to observe personal hygiene as one of the preventive ways to curb the disease.
Reacting on the level of preparedness of his school, the chairman of the school’s advisory board, Mr. Akin Fakorade, in a press statement made available to newsmen in Calabar, said no stone will be left unturned to guarantee the wellbeing of all her students’, adding that the issue of personal hygiene had been a lifestyle in the school right from inception.
He disclosed that even before the resumption of schools, the management of Southern British High School had already embarked on her periodic fumigation exercise of the school’s premises.
Fakorade said: “SBHS School had always ensured the availability of well treated drinking water as well as the provision of hand washing facilities both within and outside the hostels to encourage personal hygiene and community health among her students and members of staff.
“We are a top notch school with strict emphasis on personal hygiene and community health. We have ensured the availability of clean and well treated drinking water as well as adequate provision for sanitation and other domestic chores.
“During this short vacation, we have fumigated the school and ensured the removal of domestic waste. The sceptic tanks have also been evacuated to keep the environment healthy for all students and staff. SBHS is cholera free. The school remains a top notch citadel of learning with the 21st century learning and teaching approaches for all desiring a safe place for their child to excel.”
However, checks by our correspondent across few public and private schools in the Calabar metropolis indicated that little or no level of preparedness to prevent possible infection of the disease caused by a bacterium called Vibrio cholera, were noticed.
