NULGE Submits Template To Presidency, Governors On Way forward For LG Financial Autonomy

From Femi Oluwatoyin (Ibadan)

The National Union of Local Government Workers (NULGE) has concluded area gets to submit a template to the presidency and state governors on local government financial autonomy.

The template will contain a clear roadmap for the seamless implementation of the recent judgment of the Supreme Court granting financial autonomy to local governments.

Tagged “Operational Guidelines,” the seven-step template is designed to address the fundamental challenges that have hindered effective local government administration in Nigeria.

NULGE National President, Ambali Olatunji, who unveiled the blueprin during an interview on private radio station in Ibadan on Sunday,
allayed fears that the financial autonomy might be undermined by existing challenges including inability to pay primary school teachers’ salaries.

He noted that local government workers also faced similar salary payment issues, which led to the concept of zero allocation, but  expressed optimism that lessons have been learned from past experiences.

“With the advent of social media, transparency and accountability are now enhanced, making it difficult for fraud to thrive.

“We are confident that our Operational Guidelines will provide a solid foundation for the successful implementation of financial autonomy, ensuring effective local government administration and improved service delivery to the grassroots, Olatunji stated.
