NGO Accuses MultiChoice of Economic Discrimination, Exploitation of Nigerians

By Our Reporter

A Nigerian consumer rights group, Save the Consumers, has accused MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, of unfair economic practices by imposing a price hike on Nigerian subscribers while reducing costs and adding value for customers in South Africa.

The organization raised concerns over MultiChoice’s recent 21% increase in subscription fees for Nigerian users, which took effect on March 1, 2025. This came despite a directive from Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) ordering the company to halt the price hike pending an ongoing investigation.

Save the Consumers, in a statement issued on Sunday by its Executive Director, Dr. Aliyu Ilias, criticized the disparity in treatment between Nigerian and South African consumers. According to the group, MultiChoice slashed prices in South Africa by up to 38%, introduced new channels, and enhanced user experience—measures they argue acknowledge economic challenges faced by South African households.

“Increasing prices in Nigeria while lowering them at home amounts to economic discrimination,” the organization declared, accusing MultiChoice of exploiting Nigerian consumers.

The development has sparked fresh concerns about the regulation of foreign-owned businesses operating in Nigeria. The FCCPC had previously taken legal action against MultiChoice over alleged unfair pricing, but the company proceeded with its latest hike despite regulatory objections.

Many Nigerian consumers have expressed frustration over the increase, with some calling for stronger government intervention and even a boycott of MultiChoice services. As the debate continues, all eyes remain on the FCCPC’s next move in its ongoing battle with the South African media giant.
