Cross River: Police Inspector Kills One, Injures Four in Calabar

By Ndifereke Bassey

Tragedy struck in Calabar as a police inspector went on a shooting spree, killing one person and injuring four others in the Watt Market area of the Cross River State capital.

The yet-to-be-identified officer, attached to the Atakpa Police Station, reportedly ran out of the station, cocked his rifle, and began shooting indiscriminately at traders and passersby.

Eyewitnesses said one victim died on the spot, while the four others, who sustained severe injuries, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo, said the officer had been arrested and the situation brought under control.

“The inspector had just returned from night duty, and as standard procedure, he was supposed to drop his rifle at the station,” she explained.

“However, he refused to comply and started behaving erratically. His colleagues attempted to calm him down, but he suddenly ran out and began shooting.

“We have taken him into custody and are ensuring that the injured victims receive the necessary medical attention,” Ugbo added.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances that led to the officer’s actions.
