C'River: PHED Disconnects Assembly Quarters Over Non-Payment Of Electricity Bills
By Our Reporter
The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company PHED has cut off the public power supply to the Cross River State House of Assembly Quarters located at Essien Offiong Avenue, in Calabar, due to accumulated unpaid bills covering almost a year.
It could be recalled that the speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem had earlier in an interview with a TV presenter in Calabar disclosed that he had paid all outstanding bills owed to the PHED hence restoring power permanently to the quarters.
This seems not to be the case as the recent cut in power supply is as a result of a backlog of 6 months electricity bill owed.
The blackout issue in the Assembly quarters has been a recurrent issue for months now.
Before the recent disconnection, the Assembly had gone for weeks without electricity as the transformer that provides power to the quarters was faulty, upon replacing it on the 15th of June 2024, the distribution company arrived a few days later to recoup their 6-month areas.
Currently, the Quarters is being powered by a diesel-powered generator which comes on by 7pm daily and goes off by 9am.
