Communique Issued At The End Of Nigeria Union of Journalists Cross River State Council Congress Held On Wednesday, June 26th 2024 At The Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre, State Housing, Calabar CRS
The Congress which was presided by the Council Chairman, Comr. Archibong Bassey with members across various chapels including all Executive Members of the State Council in attendance deliberated on issues affecting the Union, Cross River State and the Federal Government of Nigeria with the following resolve:
1. Congress appreciates Cross River State Government and the Federal Government on the level of improvements on security matters and other policies geared towards repositioning the nation.
2. Congress expresses displeasure on the prolonged delay in the completion of Calabar-Itu Federal highway saying it is unhealthy and a serious setback on the economic development of Cross River and Akwa Ibom States, therefore, calling on the Federal Government to ensure the speedy completion of the road project.
3. Congress commends the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for the installation of solar lights in some streets in Calabar Metropolise and the rehabilitation of some roads in Calabar.
4. Congress commends the Cross River State Government for the ground breaking for construction of Adiabo-Ikonoto road in Odukpani LGA
5. Congress acknowledges Government efforts in sorting out list of retirees and plans put in place to effect payments of gratuities while appealing to Government to fast track the payment process.
6. Congress also commends the CRS Government for payments of WEAC registration fee for 16,301 Students of the State origin.
7. Congress appeals to the State Government to call on the contractors handling the Calabar - Biase axis of the Federal highway to expedite action for the completion of the road project.
8. Congress further calls on the State Government to commerce the process to conduct Local Government Elections in the State.
9. Congress commends the Federal Government on the commencement of Lagos - Calabar Coastal road project from the Calabar axis.
10. Congress calls on the Federal Government to commence the process of conducting a credible National Population Census this year 2024.
11. Congress calls on the Federal Government to pay Nigerian workers a living wage to caution the harsh economic realities in the Country.
12. Congress appeals to the Federal Government to extend the construction of the Lagos - Calabar Coastal road to the South Eastern part of the Country.
