Worried by the growing spate of insecurity rattling the state, Speaker of the Cross River House of Assembly Rt Hon Elvert Ayambim has implored the Nigerian Army to explore viable options of complementing the efforts of other sister security outfits in tackling the growing security menace bedeviling the state.
The Speaker stated this when he led some principal officers of the House on a courtesy visit to the Commander,13 Brigade of the Nigerian Calabar Brigadier General Evaeest Okoro at the Brigade Headquarters in Calabar.
He lamented the plethora of security challenges confronting Cross River notably kidnapping, carjacking, and cultism stressing that a robust synergy between the various security outfits was needed to surmount the nightmare.
According to him"the upsurge in kidnappings is unbearable and demands a resolute response to curtail this threat confronting us. The abduction of Dr. Mrs.Ekanem Ephraim, a professor of neurology is a sad episode highlighting the precarious situation rocking the state."
"The ugly scenario which has dented our enviable status as the most peaceful secured state in Nigeria calls for total overhauling of the security architecture of the state with the Army, along with other military formations playing a commanding role in assisting the Police."
In his remarks, the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Everest Okoro expressed delight over the visit, stressing that it will go a long way in strengthening the existing bond between Brigade and the state government.
He disclosed the Brigade has always been disposed to performing its complementary role in ensuring internal security and will never hesitate whenever the need arises to wade off growing threats to the safety of the citizenry.
