The fairways of the Calabar Golf Club are alive with excitement as golfers tee off in the club’s electrifying Ramadan & Easter Match-Play Tournament. A showcase of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship, the two-leg showdown pits two rival teams—the Mulligans and the Veterans—against each other in a battle for supremacy.
The first leg, played over the Ramadan public holiday, saw the Mulligans edge out the Veterans/T&T in a fiercely contested Double Match-Play, securing an 8–4 victory. But the tournament is far from over. With the final leg set for Easter Monday, April 21st, the Veterans are gearing up for a comeback, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch.
Speaking at the tee-off, Club Captain Engr. Bassey Edet Mkposong underscored the event’s significance beyond the scorecard. “This is about more than just winning—it’s about fellowship, fitness, and keeping the game alive,” he said. He highlighted the club’s efforts to rejuvenate golf in Cross River, including membership drives, training programs, and partnerships with the Sports Ministry to scout and develop young talent.
Mkposong also addressed the common misconception that golf is an exclusive sport, insisting that it is accessible to all. “Golf isn’t just for the elite—it’s a game for everyone, and we’re proving that right here on this course,” he said.
Adding to the buzz, Competition Secretary and Caddy Officer, Mr. Fidel Udie praised the tournament’s strong turnout and electric atmosphere. “This event isn’t just about competition; it’s about celebrating the game, bringing people together, and making golf even more exciting,” he stated.
Among the standout voices was female golfer Gladness Dan, who used the platform to rally more women into the sport. “Golf is a game of life—it’s for all ages, from toddlers to seniors in their 80s,” she said, adding that the sport offers not just fun, but also incredible health benefits, including calorie-burning, fat loss, hydration, and stress relief.
As the final leg approaches, all eyes are on the Veterans as they attempt to level the score. Will they stage a dramatic comeback, or will the Mulligans cement their dominance? One thing is certain—the Calabar Golf Club’s Ramadan & Easter Match-Play Tournament is proving to be a true spectacle, showcasing the best of competition, camaraderie, and the undying spirit of the game.
