Business Tycoon, Akak, Urges Media to Promote Unity, Friendship
By Ebi Collins, Calabar
In an impassioned appeal, Mr. Ben Akak, a business magnate and former APC governorship aspirant in the 2023 Cross River State election, has called on journalists to harness the power of their profession to build stronger communities, foster unity, and cultivate lasting relationships.
Speaking informally with journalists in Calabar, Akak highlighted the pivotal role of the media in shaping society, urging practitioners to use their platform to mend divisions and amplify the voices of the marginalized. “Journalists are the hope of society, especially for the less privileged who form the majority,” he said. “You are uniquely positioned to weave the fabric of a more peaceful, harmonious world.”
Akak encouraged journalists to go beyond reporting and consider their broader impact on society, emphasizing the importance of relationships in their work. “As journalists, your ability to make and sustain friendships will define your legacy. Use your profession to bridge divides and strengthen bonds that endure,” he advised.
He also issued a caution against allowing the profession to be weaponized for political or personal agendas. “Some politicians may try to use you to harm others. Resist such temptations. Always think about the long-term consequences of your actions, so you can live with a clear conscience,” Akak implored.
Addressing the economic realities of the profession, Akak urged journalists to diversify their skills and explore legitimate business ventures to secure their financial stability. “Don’t let years of dedication to journalism leave you disillusioned. Broaden your horizons and create opportunities for yourself beyond the newsroom,” he said.
Mr. Akak concluded by reaffirming the transformative power of journalism, calling it a profession capable of healing divides and nurturing peace. “Journalism is more than reporting — it is a tool for unity, understanding, and progress. Use it wisely and with purpose,” he added.
His words serve as a powerful reminder of the media’s capacity to shape not just the news but also the bonds that hold communities together.
