Wike Expresses Frustration Over Defection of Akwa Ibom Gov To APC

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep frustration over the dwindling fortunes of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), warning that continued silence and inaction by the party’s national leadership could lead to further collapse.
Wike made this known in Abuja on Monday, June 9, 2025, during a meeting with party loyalists under the banner of the “Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP.”
In a video clip shared on the X handle of The Guardian Nigeria, Wike voiced alarm over recent political developments, particularly the defection of key PDP figures and the party’s electoral defeats in previously strong states.
“As you see today, PDP has lost Edo State, PDP has lost Delta State, PDP has lost Akwa Ibom State. I don't know where they belong in Rivers State. As a serious party, you are closing your eyes, folding your arms and seeing things happen like this, and every day you don't want to do what is right,” he stated.
Wike’s remarks were a direct response to the PDP's loss of the Edo governorship to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 2024 election.
In April, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa defected to the APC, citing the need to align with the federal government for better development prospects.
Just days ago, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno followed suit, blaming unresolved leadership crises at the national level for his departure.
In Rivers State, political uncertainty continues. Governor Siminalayi Fubara is currently serving a six-month suspension following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in response to the protracted political crisis in the state.
Despite the tensions, Governor Fubara has publicly praised President Tinubu for his intervention, crediting him with stabilizing the situation.
He also visited the president in Lagos before the recent Sallah celebrations.
