 The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 governorship  candidate in the state, Sen. Prof, Sandy Onor, has bagged a distinguished award for his outstanding contributions towards educational development in the state  and country.

 Sen. Onor, who was a former Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly Abuja, was honoured alongside former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Mrs Betta Edu and former Commissioner of information in the state Mr Patrick Ugbe by the University of Calabar.

  The award Recipients who were all alumni of the University of Calabar at one session or the other were appreciated for their efforts in making the institution proud. 

  Receiving the award, Onor, thanked the Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Banku Obi and her team for acknowledging his little contributions to his Alma Mater as well as the society.

  He states:' I am aware the department of History is undertaking another phase of renovation, I promise my commitment to this project. Thanks so much , Golden Jubilee Vice Chancellor and your team for honouring me, I therefore dedicate this award to the Staff and Students of the University of Calabar."

  Others who received the UNICAL at fifty award include, the thirty seventh Convocation Lecturer, and Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Abuja, Senator Jeremiah Kalu, Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Minister of States,  Senator John Owan Eno, among prominent Cross Riverians and Nigerians.

  During the Lecture, the Convocation Lecturer, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu called for the observance of a  standing ovation to honour lecturers, and students who passed through the institution from the current Vice Chancellor to those who came before while recalling that each has played a role in shaping the legacy being  celebrated.

 "This University did not only just educate us, it prepared us for life. It taught us to think critically, to lead courageously, to adopt, to improvise and thrive no matter the obstacles before us. Kalu explained."

  Highlight was the unveiling and launching of the Book UNICAL at 50 by the Golden Jubilee Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, Fund raising for UNICAL at 50 projects, cutting of anniversary cake and cultural display.
