Nigeria has benefited a total of $7.8 billion as foreign aid from the United State of America in the last 10 years according to statistics.
The amount which is about ₦13,098,618,000.00 (thirteen billion ninety-eight million six hundred eighteen thousand Naira) is aid sent to Nigeria from 2015 to 2024.
A break down of the yearly disbursement is as follows:
2015 — $446 million
2016 — $543 million
2017 — $643 million
2018 — $877 million
2019 — $761 million
2020 — $880 million
2021 — $922 million
2022 — $974 million
2023 — $1 billion
2024 — $783 million
The funding both from the government, private organizations and individuals has been very instrumental to saving a lot of lives in Nigeria ranging from those living with HIV, malaria, maternal mortality issues, access to SRHR services, emergency response, agriculture and others.
Of course, some dubious Nigerian NGOs also make a mess of some of the funding but the truth is that Americans have been good to Nigerians and Africans.
The president of the United State of America Donald Trump on January 20 2025 issued an executive order halting all foreign aids across the world especially in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The order has left in doubt the future of many life-saving programmes in Africa
