It was a refreshing moment of learning with ease, as lecturers and students of Centre for Mass Communication and Media Studies of Mainland Business School, Ayananse, along Unicem factory road, Calabar in Cross River State, paraded scholars and exhibited shows to demonstrate the dynamism of Mass Communication through different eras, as part of activities to celebrate its media week.
In a keynote address to welcome guests, academic and non-academic staff, students and members of their host community, the Rector of the school, Dr. Anniecan Ezekiel Ekaidem, acknowledged the progressive nature of technology which has advanced the course of humanity and has made communication easier, faster, more efficient and effective than it was in decades past. He urged the students to utilise all the opportunities that the school has afforded them to learn and become relevant to the world.
Also speaking, the Head, Centre for Mass Communication and Media Studies, Mr. Donald Obong, told the audience that the media week was necessary in order to encourage robust learning with ease. He also stressed the need for students to be exposed to the media practice and the professionals beyond the classroom. He intimated the audience that the media week was an annual event aimed at exposing the students to the pragmatic aspects of the course, afford them an opportunity to interact freely with their lecturers as well as compare notes about recent trends and technologies in the information industry.
In separate paper presentations on the topics: “Communication for Sustainable Development” and “The Role of Globalisation in Information Gathering and Dissemination” Comrades; Essien Ojoi and Egbe David, underscored the role of communication as an agent of change in a globalised era.
In a remark, a student of the school, Marvelous Kanu praised the management of the school for the various platforms offered them to learn the needed skills needed to excel in life. She also charged her fellow students to reciprocate the kind gestures of the school by living up to expectations. “As students we need to relate well with our teachers. We need to be law-abiding. As much as the school gives to us with a view to making us become useful to our world, we need to reciprocate this kind gesture, by becoming good ambassadors of our school.” She said.
The Media week which started on Monday, 11th November 2024 with briefings of the students, was opened to all and sundry on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th November, 2024 respectively, and featured paper presentations by lecturers and students, drama presentation, exhibitions and interactive sessions.
